NATIONAL GOAT SHOWS.

Animal shows have long been in vogue as a tool for networking opportunities for educationists, researchers, extension workers and industry people. University of Agriculture, Faisalabad has a tradition of organizing such shows as a teaching tool for training young people in animal agriculture. Presenting animals at cattle shows bring pride and honour to the owner. Competitions at these shows play important role in the development of breeds and serve as a yardstick for fellow breeders to develop their breeds. At University of Agriculture Faisalabad, horse and cattle show is now a permanent feature and people wait for the occasion throughout the year. These shows are conducted in February/March when buffaloes and cattle are generally at their peak production and weather is mild. Goat raisingcentres around the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, when goats are finally finished for selling at high prices. The proposed goat show will provide anopportunity for goat lovers at public and private level to show their breeds and compete for highest weight, milk and beauty. Availability of goodsacrificial animals is expected for public at EidulAzha. Actually goats in Pakistan are the fastest growing animal species. There are 36 breeds of goat with a total population of over 60 million. Preference for goat meat is the major reason for its faster growth in the country. The Beetals are the most popular breed. Appreciable diversity among and within goat breeds exists in morphological, growth, fertility and other traits. For example, adult body weight varies from 20-70 kg with exceptional bucks reaching as high as 290 kg, the last year's champion of Faisalabad goat mela. Goat raising is generally a low input activity, however, raising of sacrificial animals is specialized in certain areas of the country and production system may be quite intensive. Within-breed, selection is a preferred strategy for improvement of traits of economic importance. This requires capacity building of various stakeholders. Indigenous goat resources can be better utilized on sustainable basis if farmers are organized to augment breed development efforts. Livestock and Dairy Development Department, Government of Punjab through its Directorate of Small Ruminants is conserving various breeds and is helping farmers to conserve and develop breeds for commercial purposes on scientific lines. This year, to provide youth of Pakistan, occasions of healthy festivities through animal shows/competitions, Government of Punjab is organizing Youth Festivals. Breeding characteristics of Yaks.  Cross breeding of male yaks with common cows in order to produce viable and exceptionally well desired hybrid offsprings is one the most important subject matter as far as local population is concerned. Breeding closely related to domestic cows, pure yak can cross with the domestic cow to produce fertile female offspring and infertile male offspring. The female offspring is locally called “ zhomo ’’ and male is called “zho . These hybrids are better than the yak and cow. The female zhomo are considered to be the good milk producer and the male zho are used as draft animal (for the purpose of loading and working). THE IMPORTANCE OF WILD ANIMAL SUFFERING.

Summary The number of wild animals vastly exceeds that of animals on factory farms, in laboratories, or kept as pets. Therefore, animal advocates should consider focusing their efforts to raise concern about the suffering that occurs in the natural environment. While in theory this could involve trying directly to engineer more humane ecological systems, in practice I think activists should concentrate on promoting the meme of caring about wild animals to other activists, academics, and other sympathetic groups. The massive amount of suffering occurring now in nature is indeed tragic, but it pales by comparison to the scale of good or harm that our descendants — with advanced technological capability — might effect. I fear, for instance, that future humans may undertake terraforming, directed panspermia, or sentient simulations without giving much thought to the consequences for wild animals. Our #1 priority should be to ensure that future human
